Brian K. Vaughn’s and Fiona Staples’s comic book masterpiece Saga continues in the latest collected volume that tells the tale of two people from different races who are at war with each other and end up falling in love. Neither government is happy with the union and each side dispatches people that will hopefully mete out justice against the law breakers and get rid of their newborn daughter which both agree is an abomination. If you haven’t been reading Saga then you are lucky because now you get to experience two volumes instead of one. You can also read about volume one in one of my earlier posts.
In the previous book we meet Alana and Marko and get to witness the birth of their daughter Hazel. They are being hunted by bounty hunters but with a bit of help they were able to make it out of the planet they were on alive. Now we get introduced to Marko’s parents. Like him they sport horns and are able to use magic. But after the events of the last volume Marko needs to rescue his babysitter who also happens to be a ghost from a nearby planet. Meanwhile Alana gets to know Marko’s dad who she doesn’t trust at first but unlike Marko’s mother he’s the more calm and nurturing type and they get along after a bit. Meanwhile somewhere in deep space we have the bounty hunter known as The Will. He finally gets to meet the person who put the bounty on Marko and Alana. It’s none other than Marko’s ex girlfriend. With some coaxing and deal making The Will finally gets back on the job. So how will he go about searching for Marko and Alana? And whatever happened to Prince Robot IV? Buy the book!
We get a bit more of an origin on how Marko and Alana met and finally ended up with each other as well as a bit of Marko’s past. Marko’s parents were also a nice surprise. The mother is the warrior in the family the father is the armorer but seems more like a seamstress/tailor. Waiting for the next volume is going to hurt, but with all good things the wait is worth it.
Saga continues to be a worthy series for people that are both beginners to comics and veterans alike. It has great art, story and characters. Plus it’s a nice change of pace from the usual super hero titles.
